
Delaware Prevails 53-44 Over Dragons in Newark

Newark, Del. – Hollie Mershon led the Dragons with 17 points in her second career start and knocked down a late three-pointer, but Delaware converted 10 free throws down the stretch to hold on for a 53-44 victory. The loss drops the Dragons to 13-9 on the season (5-6) and the Blue Hens improve to 13-9 (6-5). Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 18 points for Delaware she also led the Hen's 43-rebound effort with 18 caroms.
Delaware outrebounded Drexel 43-30 and 14-6 on the offensive glass. The Hens also availed themselves of 13 Drexel turnovers to score 17 points.
Drexel trailed by six at halftime, but quickly launched a rally in the second half to pull itself back into the game. The Dragons shot 39.3 percent in the second period and 34.6 from the floor in the game. Rosseel and Mershon added three treys apiece for the Dragons, who shot 7-for-21 from deep.
Nacickaite returned the lead to Drexel for the first time since the opening minutes when she banked in a three-pointer with 15:23 on the clock to make it a 26-24 game. From that juncture the game turned into a nip-and-tuck affair over the next several minutes.
Delaware used a 10-2 run to pull out to a 44-36 lead on a layup by Jacquetta May with 7:48 to play.
A Jasmina Rosseel three-pointer off a kick-out from Wootton in the post cut the lead to 44-39 with just under five to play.
Drexel's defense held the Hens without a point for the next seven minutes of play, but the Dragons' own offense sputtered with a pair of missed layups and two three-point attempts that wouldn't fall.
With a minute left the Dragons had the ball and set up a play with Nacickaite at the top of the key, but as she drove and looked for a pass underneath, the Hens defense closed and snatched the ball from the passing lane.
From that juncture the Dragons had to foul to get the ball back and the Hens eased their way into the win, despite missing four free throws down the stretch.
Mershon canned a late three-pointer from well beyond the line to give the team its final points of the game. Delle Donne converted 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the last minute to help her team hold on for the win.
Mershon scored seven of her team-leading 17 points in the first half and pulled in five boards to keep her team in the game. Despite a 29-percent shooting performance in the half, Drexel trailed just 22-16 at the break.
The nine-point margin was Drexel's largest scoring disparity in a conference loss this season. It also marked the second straight game that the team failed to score 50 points.
Drexel will look to get back on track against Hofstra on Thursday night. The Dragons beat the Pride earlier this season at home.
