Drexel Crew Competes at the 2011 Murphy Cup on Saturday

Philadelphia - Drexel crew returns to the Schuylkill to compete against some of the region's top programs at the 2011 Murphy Cup on Saturday, March 26. The Dragons will make an appearance in the regatta's first race, the women's novice eight at 9:06 a.m. It will be the first of 10 boats Drexel Head Coach Paul Savell will be sending to the river to represent the Blue and Gold.
The Dragons' men's novice eight will compete at 9:30 a.m. in the third of three heats. The top finisher will book a final spot while the three best non-winning times of the three heats will also advance to the 2:42 p.m. final. Coxswain Marc Smith, stroke John Pieper, Vanja Busic, Sebastian Ryan, Steven Miner, Ryan McSpedon, Ross Morris, Matthew Ryan and bow Marcus DeMarici will be Drexel's entry in the Peggy Greenawalt.
In the men's varsity four, Drexel is placed in the third of five heats scheduled to take place at 10:36 a.m. The LeBow College of Business boat will feature coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Gregory Pierce, Paul Wisniowski, Dylan Siegfried and bow Adam Cordi. The men's second varsity four, in the Tobey & Kim Oxholm boat, are scheduled to race at 10:42 a.m. with coxswain Ashley Jordan, Milos Rudjovic, Filip Topalovic and bow Pete Eyrich. Drexel needs to win the race or posting the next best time in order to compete in the 3:06 p.m. final.
Filip Topalovic and Milos Rudjovic will represent the Dragons in the men's varsity two race. The Unnamed Pair boat will compete at noon in the first of two heats. The top two finishers will land a spot in the finals while the two best non-winning times will advance to the finals scheduled at 3:30 p.m.
The men's second varsity eight will race in the second of two heats, in the Annette Pennoni boat, with coxswain Steven Matyas, stroke Kevin Rorabaugh, Gregg Francis, Brian Timlin, Michael Golden, Ernesto Del Valle, Patrick McGann, Michael Faust and bow Peter Schmidt, need to finish among the top two or register a top-two non-winning time to compete in the 3:42 p.m. final.
In men's varsity eight action, Drexel will compete in the fourth of four heats against Rutgers-Camden, Lehigh, Virginia, Villanova and Vassar at 1:30 p.m. The winner of the heat books a spot in the 4:12 p.m. final while the two top non-winners among the three heats will also compete in the final. The next best six non-winners will compete in the petite final at 4:00 p.m. The Vince Vidas boat will feature coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Kurt Linton, Kyle Fabel, Nick Buyse, Lorenzo Albala, Timothy Drake, Will Masters, Liam O'Neill and bow Jacob Sloan.
Drexel's women's novice eight in the Anna Marie with coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Sarah Mackenzie, Colleen Delany, Amanda O'Malley, Elizabeth Daugherty, Caitlin Buser, Alyssa Leahy, Shannon O'Donnell and bow Jackie Bender will race in the second of three heats with the winner of each heat advancing to the finals while the three best non-winning times will also clinch a spot in the women's novice eight final scheduled to begin at 2:36 p.m.
The Dragons also will have two boats in the women's varsity four. The women's second varsity four, in the Dawn Byers boat, will take the water at 9:54 a.m. with coxswain Carolina Torres, stroke Lillian Reed, Elise Panacek, Emily Barth, and bow Alicia Hoy. Drexel will also compete in the Sandi Sheller boat with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Jillian Skovran, Kathy Cheng, Chloe Swansen and bow Brogan Piecara in the second of six heats at 10:18 a.m. with the winners of each heat taking a spot in the finals. The final for the event is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
