Philadelphia –Drexel University President John Fry has appointed Dr. Kevin Gard to the position of Faculty Athletic Representative for the school. Dr. Gard, who is an associate clinical professor of physical therapy at Drexel, will serve a three-year term in the position.
“Kevin is a well-respected, experienced and well-liked faculty member at Drexel,” Drexel Athletics Director Dr. Eric Zillmer said. “His academic specialty is in the rehabilitation of athletes so he already understands the culture of sports. All of us at Drexel athletics are looking forward to working with him to continue to celebrate the scholar in the student-athlete.”
Dr. Gard has been a faculty member in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences at Drexel since 1995. He currently serves as the Director of the Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and Vice-Chair of the Department. Dr. Gard has been recognized by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as an Orthopaedic Specialist since 2001. He earned his doctorate from Temple University. Dr. Gard also holds a master's degree from Hahnemann University and earned a bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University.
Dr. Gard replaces outgoing Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Hazem Maragah, who now serves as the President of the Drexel Athletic Club. Drexel athletics was recognized for having its basketball programs ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in the Academic Progress Rate and the nationally-ranked field hockey team was singled out for having the second highest grade-point average in the nation with a 3.52.
Faculty Athletic Representatives are in place to promote academic integrity in intercollegiate athletics, to facilitate the integration of the athletics and academic components of the collegiate community, and to oversee institutional control of athletics on campus. The Faculty Athletic Representative brings his or her experience as an educator and an understanding of faculty values to the academic enhancement of student-athletes.
