Philadelphia, Pa. — A trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands and another appearance in ESPN's Tip-Off Marathon highlight the Drexel men's basketball 2011-12 schedule. Drexel Head Coach Bruiser Flint and his team will be looking to give the Dragons back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
Drexel opens the season with the earliest game in school history. The Dragons tip-off against Rider at 6 a.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J., as part of the third annual ESPN Tip-Off Classic. Three days later, Drexel will meet Norfolk State in the first round of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. The Dragons will then play either TCU or Virginia in the second round. Other teams in the tournament include Marquette of the Big East, Mississippi of the Southeastern Conference, Drake and Winthrop.
The Dragons return home and have a few days off for Thanksgiving before renewing their rivalry with Saint Joseph's. Drexel has beaten the Hawks in four of the last seven meetings and will be looking for back-to-back wins against the school for the first time in history. The Dragons will also visit Niagara and Binghamton in non-conference play. They will once again participate in an ESPN's BracketBuster game at an opponent to be determined. Drexel will play its first host game of the year against Princeton on Dec. 10. The Tigers, the Ivy League champs, won 25 games last year and narrowly missed upsetting Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament. Missouri Valley-foe Bradley, Fairfield and St. Francis (Pa.) will also visit the Daskalakis Athletic Center in December. Fairfield won 25 games and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title a year ago.
The Colonial Athletic Association schedule begins with one game in December before resuming in January. The Dragons will visit arch-rival Delaware in the opener on Dec. 3. Drexel will play home-and-home series with the Blue Hens, Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, Towson, William & Mary. The team will play road games at UNC Wilmington and the season finale at Old Dominion, while hosting George Mason and Final Four participant VCU at the DAC.
Drexel finished the 2010-11 season with a 21-10 overall record and an 11-7 mark in CAA play. It was the second time in the last five seasons the Dragons reached the 20-win mark under Head Coach Bruiser Flint.
