PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's tennis team opened its spring schedule on Wednesday evening, falling at nearby Penn, 7-0. The Dragons fell for the first time in three dual matches this season, having gone 2-0 in such events during the fall.
The Quakers got the doubles point quickly with 8-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Despite that, the Dragons' top doubles team of Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa battled, but ceded an early 5-1 lead and fell in a tiebreak set, 8-7 (1).
Penn also swept through the singles matches, clinching the overall match victory when Daniela DePaoli defeated Elise Leizerovich at the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-0. Marcela Rosales, playing at No. 3, put up a strong fight in the first set against Alex Ion, but ended up dropping her match 7-5, 6-0. It was nearly the reverse story for Mafa at No. 2, falling to Stephanie Do 6-1, 7-5.
Drexel will return to the courts on Friday when they head to Virginia to take part in the VCU 4-1 Tournament over the weekend. Their next team competition will be Jan. 22 when they host St. Francis (Pa.), the first of four straight home matches.
