RICHMOND - The Drexel men's tennis team opened its spring season over the weekend, while the women continued theirs at the VCU 4-1 Tournament. The men went 1-2 on the weekend, earning a 3-2 team victory over Norfolk State, while the women dropped all three of their matches.
The Drexel men got their first team victory of the spring on Saturday, defeating Norfolk State, 3-2. Drexel got the doubles point when Daniel Hansen and Skyler Davis earned a 6-4, 6-1 point. Bryan Nguyen got a singles point at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-1. The deciding match came at No. 1 singles, where Badr Ouabdelmoumen prevailed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to get the Dragons the win.
Earlier in the tournament, the men had fallen to host VCU 5-0, and to Campbell by a 3-0 score.
The Drexel women were the first squad on the courts on Friday morning, taking on Campbell. Alex Bell put up a strong showing against Natasha Afridi, defeating her 6-4, 6-4, but that would be the only point Drexel would get as the Fighting Camels took a 3-1 team victory.
Later in the day, the Dragons were swept by the host Rams, 4-0. Sonja Stosic had the best showing for Drexel, falling 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Drexel also fell to UNCW on Saturday morning, 5-0.
