PHILADELPHIA – Drexel head women's tennis coach Eric Biscoveanu has decided to step down from his position as head coach to pursue other opportunities outside of college athletics.
Biscoveanu just completed his fourth year at the helm of the women's tennis program, amassing 40 victories, the fourth-highest in program history. He s the second-fastest to reach the 40-win milestone.
"The program's recent success, both on and off the court, is a direct result of Eric's leadership and his ability to recruit, retain, and develop outstanding student-athletes," said Maisha Kelly, Vice President, Director of Athletics & Recreation. "Upon assuming leadership of the program, Eric had an immediate impact, establishing a culture defined by the qualities necessary to compete at a championship level. We wish him continued success in his next endeavor and are confident the program is well positioned to sustain its momentum moving forward."
Biscoveanu was named the program's head coach ahead of the 2022-23 season, in which he coached the team to the CAA's biggest upset in women's conference postseason history. Drexel, as the seventh seed, defeated the second-seeded Delaware Blue Hens, 4-2, earning the program its first appearance in the conference semifinals.
"My time at Drexel has been incredibly meaningful," Biscoveanu said. "I was able to work with some truly incredible student-athletes over my time who had great energy, resilience and competitiveness. Because of that, my time at Drexel was amazing and I could not wish for anything more. I'm proud of what we built and where the program is headed. I would like to thank Maisha Kelly and Mehdi Rhazali for taking a chance on me four years ago."
The 2023-24 season was no different. Biscoveanu, once again, took the program to the conference semifinals, finishing the season with a 12-8 record.
Biscoveanu ended his tenure with the women's tennis team after coaching the team to its third CAA Semifinals match in four years. During his time with Drexel, Biscoveanu helped develop eight players to earn All-CAA awards, including Lorie Lemongo, who earlier this season, became the all-time singles wins leader in program history, ending her career with 72 victories.
A national search for Drexel's next women's tennis coach is underway.
