
Thomas Drains Five Treys in Win vs. Northeastern, 71-53

Philadelphia - Derrick Thomas drained all five of his three-point attempts as Drexel defeated Northeastern, 71-53, in front of the third straight sellout crowd at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday. Thomas scored 20 points as Drexel remained unbeaten at home and moved to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in CAA play.
Drexel shot a season-high 60 percent from the floor and went 9-for-14 from behind the arc. Thomas finished with a season-high 20 points, 12 of which came in the opening half. The junior was 7-for-8 from the floor and also had four steals. He was one of four Dragons in double figures. Samme Givens added 19 points and handed out five assists. Freshman Damion Lee scored 17 points and was 7-for-9 from the line, while Frantz Masseanat scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists as the Dragons' win streak extended to six games. It was also the 11th straight win for the team on its home court.
Drexel trailed briefly early at 5-4, but went on an 18-0 run to open up a 17-point first half lead at 22-5. The Dragons made five of their first six three-pointers and 10 of their first 12 shots from the floor. During the run Drexel held the Huskies without a point for more than four minutes. Northeastern (9-9, 5-3 CAA) answered with a huge run of its own. The Huskies scored 15 straight points and held Drexel without a point for a span of 7:31 before Thomas broke the spell with another three-pointer. Drexel led at the half by eight points and did not trail the rest of the way.
The second half turned into a free throw shooting contest as the teams combined for 37 free throws in the final 20 minutes. Northeastern got as close as seven points early in the half when Jonathan Lee hit a three-pointer, but Drexel's lead increased to as many as 18.
The Huskies were held in check by the Drexel defense, shooting just 39 percent in the game. Jonathan Lee scored a team-high 16 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Quincy Ford was held without a field goal, but made all 10 of his free throw attempts and had five steals.
The Dragons head back on the road on Sunday as they play at William & Mary on Monday night. They have their third game in five days on Wednesday night, when Georgia State visits the DAC. The Panthers handed Drexel its only loss of the calendar year on January 2 in Atlanta.
