Fairfax, Va. – Drexel wrestling dropped two CAA duals to fall to 0-3 in conference action this year. No.18 Joe Booth continued in his winning ways going 2-0 while four other Dragons split matches along the way. Frank Cimato, Austin Sommer, No. 20 Brandon Palik and Kyle Frey all picked up one win on the day.
The Dragons got off to a slow start when No. 20 Binghamton jumped out to an early 12-0 lead with two back-to-back pins at 125 and 133 pounds. After tacking on another decision at 149 pounds Drexel responded when Sommer, 157 pound junior, majored Joe Chamish 15-2 to get the Dragons on the board. Booth, now 18-3 overall, 8-0 in duals and 3-0 in CAA, kept the momentum going with a 6-2 decision over the Bearcats' Matt Kaylor at 165 pounds. It would be the last bout Drexel would take in the dual as Binghamton went on to win 36-6.
In their next match-up the Dragons took four of 10 bouts in a losing effort to No. 25 Old Dominion. Cimato picked up an 8-5 decision over the Monarch's Jacob Kingett at 141 pounds but Old Dominion responded immediately with two more decisions. Booth earned his second win of the day when he blanked Tristan Waren 3-0, again Old Dominion strung together back-to-back decisions to keep the pressure on. Palik found the win column in a tight 3-2 decision over Joe Budi of the Monarchs at 197 pounds followed by Frey's decision at heavy weight, a 6-2 margin over Grant Champan. Old Dominion walked away with the final team victory, 22-12.
Drexel returns to the DAC this Tuesday, January 24 with a 7:00 p.m. match against Army. Join the Dragons as they offer a salute to veterans during halftime of the dual.
