BOX SCORE
NEWARK, Del. - A game featuring the top two defenses in the Colonial Athletic Association lived up to its billing on Sunday afternoon, as the Drexel women's basketball team fell short in its attempt to knock off No. 16 Delaware, 60-49. Kamile Nacickaite led the Dragons with 12 points, while Tyler Hale added 10.
In front of a sold out crowd at the Bob Carpenter Center that included United States Vice President Joe Biden, the Dragons did not back down from the Blue Hens and their preseason CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne. After falling behind by as many as 11 points midway through the first half, Drexel scraped its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to 22-20 with 2:48 to play in the period.
With junior Hollie Mershon saddled with two early fouls, Hale did a fantastic job filling in and battling down low against the strong interior presence of the Blue Hens. She came up with four points in the first half and three rebounds. Hale would finish with 10 points and six boards.
As a team, the Dragons did a fantastic job on the glass, collecting 41 rebounds including 22 on the offensive end. They outrebounded the Blue Hens 41-36, although they shot just 31.4 percent from the floor and only managed 15 second chance points, compared to 12 for Delaware on 10 offensive rebounds.
After halftime, the Blue Hens came out firing and took a nine-point lead at 33-24 with 15:46 to go. Again, however, the Dragons did not back down. With Mershon heating up, she nailed a three pointer from the right corner that cut the deficit to 36-33 with 12:58 remaining.
That would prove to be as close as Drexel would get. The Dragons battled to the end, but Delaware rebuilt their double-digit lead and Drexel did not get closer than a brief eight-point deficit with 1:17 to play.
Drexel will be back on the road on Thursday evening, when they take on VCU at 7:00 p.m.
