BRUNSWICK, Maine - Although they are still in search of their first win as a varsity program, the Drexel women's squash program made significant strides over the weekend, taking part in the Maine Round Robin and falling to Bowdoin, Colby, Wellesley and Tufts.
On Friday night, the women fell to Bowdoin in their opener at the Maine Round Robin, 9-0. All the Dragons fell in straight sets. Courtney Sabo put up the strongest fight amongst the Dragons, falling at the No. 5 position, 7-11, 1-11, 6-11.
On Saturday morning, the Dragons took on Colby, with the results much the same as the night before. Although they could not get a game victory, the Dragons showed poise in taking on the more experienced Colby team. In particular, Kiran Vasudevan at No. 1 and Atiqah Shahrin at No. 3 were singled out by head coach John White for their performances. Vasudevan fell 3-11, 6-11, 5-11 to Kate Pistel, while Shahrin dropped her match to Lindsey McKenna, 2-11, 4-11, 2-11.
Against Wellesley later that afternoon, Sabo and Vasudevan once again stood out, although both dropped their matches in three games, ultimately. Vasudevan fell 4-11, 9-11, 1-11, while Sabo went 3-11, 6-11, 4-11. Andrea Miguelez also put up a strong fight, 6-11, 3-11, 5-11 at the No. 9 position.
The weekend concluded on Saturday evening with a matchup against top-10 ranked Bates. Once again the final score was 9-0, although several Dragons put up impressive performances. Miguelez, in particular, battled hard at No. 9 before falling, 8-11, 4-11, 11-13. Claire Anderson at No. 4 also made life tough on her opponent, falling 4-11, 4-11, 5-11.
Drexel will return to the courts on Feb. 2 when they play their first-ever home match as a varsity program. The Dragons will host Haverford at the newly-christened Kline & Specter Squash Center in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The matches are set to get underway at 6:30 p.m.
