BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - Kamile Nacickaite scored 22 points and the Drexel defense held down one of the most consistent scorers in the Colonial Athletic Association, but it was not enough as the Drexel women's basketball team fell to Hofstra on Sunday, 68-61. Drexel led by eight at the half before Hofstra opened the second half on a 17-4 run to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Drexel fell to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in the CAA, a game back of Hofstra (15-5, 7-2) for second place and a half game back of James Madison for third. The Dukes host Delaware later Sunday evening.
The Dragons, who have won thanks to defense all season, held Hofstra ten points below its average scoring number in league games this season. Drexel did a particularly strong job on Shante Evans, who came in averaging 18.2 points per game. Evans finished with nine points on Sunday, ending a 31-game double-digit scoring streak, the fifth longest in the nation heading into play Sunday.
Hofstra came out shooting hot, and grabbed a 19-15 lead with 9:06 to play in the first half. Then on the Dragons' next possession, Marisa Crane found Kamile Nacickaite on the right wing, and the senior from Lithuania drained a three-pointer while being fouled by Hofstra'a Andreana Thomas. Nacickaite converted the four-point play to tie the score, sending Drexel on what would become a 14-0 run over the next 4:03.
The Dragons built a lead as large as 11 late in the first half, when an old-fashioned three-point play from Nacickaite pushed the lead to 35-24 with 1:27 remaining. Hofstra would trim the advantage to eight heading into the break, and the Pride came out firing to open the second.
Hofstra opened the second half on a 17-4 run, in which Evans - who had been held scoreless in the first half - scored eight of her nine points for the day. The Dragons were scoreless for the first 5:33 of the half, and their defense slowed Hofstra enough to get them back even at 41 before the Pride scored the next five points to take a lead they would not surrender.
With 4:14 to play, the Dragons pulled back within a point at 57-56 when Taylor Wootton knocked down one of two free throws. They had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but a turnover gave Hofstra possession, and Candice Bellocchio hit two free throws to extend the lead back to three. Despite two offensive rebounds on the next possession, the Dragons couldn't cut into the lead, and a Katelyn Loper lay-up with 2:31 to play extended Hofstra's advantage back to 61-56. Drexel could not get back within one possession the rest of the way.
Loper led the Pride with 21 points. For Drexel, Hollie Mershon added 15 points, while Tyler Hale contributed 12.
Drexel will be back in action on Thursday evening when they host George Mason at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7:00 p.m.
