PHILADELPHIA - The 2011 Drexel men's soccer team reconvened one more time over the weekend, as head coach Doug Hess and the Dragons handed out their annual awards. Ken Tribbett was named the Don Yonker Team MVP as several other Dragons were recognized for their contributions to last fall's squad.
Among the highlights on Friday night at the Liberty View Ballroom at the Independence Visitors Center was a talk given by Drexel men's soccer alum Fred Gerstenfield ('83). Gerstenfield, an All-American under former head coach Johnson Bowie in 1981, shared his story with the current crop of Dragons. He spoke of growing up in Philadelphia and working his way through high school and college, balancing a busy schedule helping his father run the family business with his dedication to the game of soccer.
After completing his playing career, Gerstenfield remained close to the game of soccer as a coach and, now, as an official. He stressed the ways in which the Dragons could give back to their communities and to the game of soccer, which has brought them together as teammates and as Drexel student-athletes.
In addition to hearing from Gerstenfield, the Dragons handed out their annual awards and looked back on the 2011 campaign. Assistant coaches Bryan Green and Cory Robertson put together video compilations of photos and highlights of the year. Those included the year's Goal of the Year and Save of the Year, as voted on by players, coaches and fans through links posted on the team's Facebook page.
The Goal of the Year belonged to Tribbett, who took a long feed from Tal Bublil and chipped it over the head of a charging Delaware keeper for the game-winner in the final minutes of double overtime against the Blue Hens on October 12. The Save of the Year went to goalkeeper Pentti Pussinen, who played every minute in goal for the Dragons in 2011, but had his finest moment with a bicycle kick save against sixth-ranked Creighton in Omaha on September 4.
After pointing out those exceptional moments from the season, Coach Hess and Coach Bowie presented the Don Yonker Team MVP award to Tribbett, who led the team with four goals - including two game-winners - and nine points. Tribbett thanked his coaches, teammates and parents among others in a brief speech.
