On January 7, 2010, Doug Hess became the fifth head coach in Drexel's rich 63-year history of men's soccer. Now entering his 10th season in charge of the Dragons, Hess has secured two NCAA appearances, two CAA regular season titles, one CAA Tournament championship and two Philadelphia Soccer Six championships to date.
Hess' Dragons took the CAA by storm for two seasons in 2012 and 2013, winning back-to-back regular season titles and a tournament championship in 2013. Both years, the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament, the program's first-ever back-to-back NCAA trips and first trips at all since 1972.
In 2012, his third season with the Dragons, Hess accomplished something no Drexel coach had been able to manage over the last 40 years - he guided Drexel to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Dragons went through the regular season 12-3-2, going 8-1-1 in the CAA to win the league's regular season title outright. The season was highlighted by a commanding 4-1 win over No. 11 Old Dominion in the conference opener for both teams. Drexel won its last three regular season games, putting together two of its eight shutouts on the season, as it clinched the league's No. 1 seed. After falling in the CAA semifinals, thee Dragons earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and hosted Brown in a first round game. Drexel was ranked in the national NSCAA Top-25 poll by the end of the regular season.
For the Dragons' success in 2012, Hess was named the CAA Co-Coach of the Year, and the Coach of the Year in the Philadelphia Soccer Six. He mentored the Soccer Six Co-Player of the Year in Nathan Page that season, and his charges also earned five All-CAA nods, two All-South Atlantic Region performers, three Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Stars, two Academic All-CAA honorees, and a Third Team Academic All-American.
In 2013, Hess repeated much of the success of the previous season and took the Dragons one step further, winning the team's first-ever CAA Tournament title. The Dragons were the regular season league champs for a second consecutive season, going 4-1-2 in regular season CAA play and earning the right to host the tournament for a second straight year. As was the case in 2012, the Dragons found themselves in a shootout to determine which team would advance from the semifinals. This time, Drexel pulled out the shootout win over Delaware. It followed that up with a 1-0 shutout win over William & Mary to capture the school's first CAA men's soccer tournament title. Drexel visited Old Dominion in a first round NCAA Tournament game after earning the league's automatic berth.
Hess earned his second straight CAA Coach of the Year nod after the Dragons' repeat performance as regular season league champs. Six of his players earned All-CAA recognition, with three making NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region teams and two being recognized as Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Stars. In addition, Ken Tribbett was named an NSCAA Academic All-American and Robert Liberatore was voted the Philadelphia Soccer Six Academic Player of the Year. The pair was joined by Nathan Page on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. At year's end, the program earned its first NCAA APR Public Recognition Award.
Prior to arriving at Drexel, Hess spent eight seasons building Campbell University's soccer program into a perennial power in the Atlantic Sun Conference. He led the Camels to a 74-70-9 overall record during his tenure in Buies Creek, N.C. Over a stretch of five seasons from 2005-09, Hess' Campbell sided went 32-5-5 in conference play, securing three regular season Atlantic Sun Conference Championships and one A-Sun Conference Tournament Title, earning the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
Hess was named First Team NCAA Division III All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a senior in 1995 at Elizabethtown College. He went on to play three seasons of professional soccer in the United Soccer League Division 3 Pro League with the Charlotte Eagles and Delaware Wizards.
Hess holds a USSF A License and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Hess earned his B.S. in business administration from Elizabethtown College in 1996 and a M.Ed. of health and science from East Stroudsburg University in 2000.
