Box Score
Philadelphia, Pa. – Samme Givens scored 18 points at Drexel dominated Towson at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 60-27. The 27 points were the fewest points ever allowed by a Drexel team since it joined the ranks of Division I in 1973. It was also the Colonial Athletic Association record for fewest amount of points ever given up in a CAA game. The win gave Drexel seven victories in its last eight games.
The Dragons (9-5, 1-2) scored the first 11 points of the game and never trailed in the contest. Towson (0-15, 0-3)was held off the board for the 6:10 of the contest before finally getting on the board. Drexel extended its lead to 25-12 at intermission as Givens finished with 10 points in the half.
The second half started out in a similar fashion for both teams. Drexel began the half with a 17-0 run before Marcus Dames banked a desperation three-pointer with the shot clock expiring at the 11:45 mark. Drexel then scored nine of the next 11 points before the Drexel reserves finished the game.
Drexel's defense allowed just four field goals in each half and set a school record by allowing its opponent to shoot just 21.6 percent from the floor. The previous record was 25 percent by Lafayette in 1988. Towson tied an NCAA Division I record with its 34th straight loss. The Tigers tied the mark set by Sacramento State back in 1999. New Jersey Institute of Technology lost 51 in a row, but they were reclassifying to Division I at the time.
Givens, who came into the game shooting 56 percent, was 7-for-8 from the field and knocked down four mid-range jump shots. Damion Lee added 12 points. Frantz Massenat chipped in with eight points, five assists and was 2-for-2 from long range. As a team, Drexel made six of its 12 three-pointers and outrebounded the Tigers by 21. Dumas led Towson with six points.
The Dragons have two more games left on their three game homestand. VCU comes to the Daskalakis Athletic Center for a rare Sunday night game. The Rams and Dragons meet at 8 p.m. in a game that can be seen on The Comcast Network. On Thursday, Jan. 12, Drexel hosts George Mason at 8:00. That game can be seen on ESPNU.
