BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's basketball team snapped a four-game skid in emphatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, as they raced by the Towson Tigers, 66-38. Drexel put together its most complete defensive effort of the season as it moved to 2-1 on the young CAA season. Kamile Nacickaite scored 19 points to lead the Dragons, including the team's first 11 points of the game. Hollie Mershon added 14 points.
Nacickaite was 4-for-4 from three-point range, giving her 202 career three-pointers. She wasted little time reaching the milestone, nailing her first trey just 49 seconds into the game and her second a little more than 2:30 into the action. With those shots, Nacickaite became just the third player in program history to reach the 200 mark, and remains the program's most efficient three-point shooter of all time, sporting a .411 career average.
It was a big day overall for the Dragons from downtown, as they shot 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, a 70.0 percentage that was their highest of the year. Seven three-point field goals also tied a season high for Drexel.
Towson got the scoring started with a quick lay-up immediately after the opening tip, but that 2-0 lead would prove to be the only one of the day for the Tigers. After Nacickaite put up 11 points to give the Dragons an 11-7 advantage, Drexel began spreading the scoring around. They would lead by as many as 14 points in the first half after a Tyler Hale lay-up made the score 24-10. The Tigers cut the lead back to six with 2:25 to play in the period, but Drexel grabbed a 30-21 lead at intermission that would only get bigger as the second half progressed.
Drexel opened the second half on a 20-7 run that effectively put the game away. Hollie Mershon had eight points during the run, and Tyler Hale converted an old-fashioned three-point play that pushed the lead to 15.
One of the big keys for the Dragons was their prowess on the glass, where they pulled down 40 rebounds compared to just 31 for the Tigers. Towson, which came into the game averaging 41.5 boards per game and outrebounded opponents by six a game, pulled down just 31 boards on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers were second in the CAA in rebounding coming into the day while Drexel stood last, but the tables were turned on Sunday.
Ayana Lee paced Drexel in rebounding for a second straight game, pulling down eight boards. She had a career high with nine at Hofstra on Thursday. Lee, who played 22 minutes, added five points, three assists and a steal. As a team, the Dragons' bench outscored Towson's 19-6. Fiona Flanagan led the way off the bench with six points.
The Dragons got scoring from 11 of the 12 players in uniform, including the first field goal of the season for sophomore Tory Thierolf and the first collegiate field goal for freshman Tiffany Johnson.
Drexel will return to action on Thursday evening, when they travel to James Madison to take on the Dukes at 7:00 p.m. Ari Bluestein will have the call for DrexelDragons.com.
