Squash Opening Weekend Features Big Wins for Both Squads

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Drexel men's and women's squash teams opened their seasons on Friday when they visited Franklin & Marshall. The men fell to the No. 7-ranked F&M team 9-0, while the women dropped their decision with the No. 14 women's team, 8-1. On Saturday, however, the Dragons bounced back with both teams scoring impressive victories over Connecticut College in the teams' home openers at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. The Dragons finished their weekend with defeats at highly-ranked Princeton on Sunday.
Freshman Damindhi Udangawa recorded the only match victory for the Dragons in the women's opener, an 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 triumph over Halley Cruice at the No. 1 position.
On the men's side, the most competitive match belonged to Harshil Dokania, who won the first set 11-3 before dropping the next three, 11-9, 11-4, 11-3 at No. 8. The rest of the Dragons were defeated in straight sets. Ibrahim Bakir, another freshman on the Drexel squad, played at the top position on the ladder but could not handle Guilherme de Melo, who won 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 for Franklin & Marshall.
On Saturday, the No. 32 women's team welcomed No. 23 Connecticut College into the Kline & Specter Squash Center, getting one of the most impressive victories in the short history of Drexel varsity squash when it handled the visitors, 8-1. All eight victories came in straight sets.
The men also cruised to a victory over Connecticut College, taking a 9-0 decision that saw just two matches go four sets.
On Sunday, the Dragons both went down at the hands of Princeton, one of the powerhouses of collegiate squash. Both teams fell by 9-0 counts.
