COLUMBIA, S.C. - Coming off the championship in the LIU Turkey Classic last weekend, the Drexel women's basketball team will return to action with one of its toughest tests of the non-conference schedule on Wednesday when they visit South Carolina. The Gamecocks are undefeated and moved into the USA Today Coaches Poll earlier this week in the No. 24 spot.
Drexel is 4-1, just the second time under head coach Denise Dillon they have had at least four wins in their first five games. They are coming off a dominating performance in Brooklyn, never trailing in wins over UMKC and Colgate. Hollie Mershon was named the tournament MVP, while Nicki Jones also earned All-Tournament recognition. Rachel Pearson, who scored 19 points in the win over UMKC, was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday.
South Carolina is 7-0 thus far this season, having just won the Reef Division of the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. They boast victories over Clemson and DePaul as well as strong mid-major programs Hampton and Florida Gulf Coast. Ashley Bruner leads the way for the Gamecocks with 12.4 points per game. Aleighsa Welch leads the team with 9.6 rebounds a contest, adding 11.7 points per game. South Carolina, coached by Philadelphia legend Dawn Staley, is outscoring and outrebounding opponents by 20 through the early going this year.
