PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team will play host to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament this weekend, with semifinal games set for Friday evening and the championship game on Sunday afternoon. Drexel, the league's regular season champion, will play the second semifinal on Friday, hosting No. 4 seed Hofstra at 7:30 p.m. All tournament games will be played at Vidas Field.
Drexel is coming off its first-ever outright CAA regular season championship, going 8-1-1 in league play to clinch the title. The Dragons, backed by a staunch defense, outpaced their closest competition by four points in the standings. Drexel was unbeaten in its final seven games of the regular season, going 6-0-1 over that span.
The Dragons have relied heavily on their defense all season long. Drexel, which has not let up more than two goals in a game since August 31, has eight shutouts on the year and let up just one total goal in five conference road games, going 5-0-0 in those matches. Senior goalkeeper Tim Washam currently ranks 16th in the nation with a 0.717 goals against average. The native of Warminster, Pa. stepped into the starting lineup in the second game of the year, putting together a 12-2-2 record with eight shutouts. He also registered his first collegiate point with an assist on a goal by Mark Donohue in the regular season finale against James Madison.
Offensively, Drexel is led by Nathan Page, whose nine goals and one assist give him 19 total points. Page not only led the Drexel offense, he was the Drexel offense for a large stretch of the season. He scored six-consecutive goals for the Dragons in a six-game span from October 6 to October 24. During that time, the Dragons went 5-0-1, winning three times by a 1-0 count.
That stretch concluded with the Dragons' only meeting with Hofstra this year, a 2-1 win on Long Island on October 24. After Page put the Dragons up 1-0 early, Hofstra got a late equalizer to even the score in the 76th minute. But then, in the 83rd minute, sophomore Robert Liberatore took a free kick from 40 yards out that bounded up and over the head of the Hofstra keeper, finding its way into the net for the game-winning goal. It was Liberatore's first collegiate goal, and his first shot of 2012. Tim Washam had six saves in the game, while Page and Fabio Machado each put four shots up.
Tickets for the tournament are $5 per day for adults. Children under 12 and students with a valid ID will be admitted free. The Dragons' semifinal game will be preceded by the first game, featuring No. 2 seed Northeastern and No. 3 seed James Madison at 5:00 p.m. The championship game will take place at Vidas Field at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, all Drexel students in attendance can stop by the Drexel Soccer tent in the parking lot for free pizzas at 7:00 p.m. before the Dragons kick off.
