Chris Fouch scored 24 points and drained six three pointers, but it wasn't enough as Drexel lost its season-opener in overtime at Kent State, 66-62.
Fouch tied the game with a three-pointer with 19 seconds to play to make it 62-62. However, on the ensuing inbound pass, Derrick Thomas committed a foul just one second later. Randal Holt was sent to the line and made both free throws to put the Golden Flashes up 64-62. The Dragons had a chance to tie it, but Thomas missed a three-pointer from the top of the key. Frantz Massenat grabbed the rebound but threw the ball away giving Kent State possession. The Dragons were forced to foul and Holt sank two free throws to ice the game.
Drexel had what appeared to be the final possession of regulation, but Massenat drove the lane but was called for a double-dribble. Kent State had four seconds to go up the court and score, but Randal Holt missed a three-pointer. KSU had tied the game at 55 with :31 left on a Chris Evans jumper just 21 seconds after Fouch nailed a three-pointer to put Drexel ahead.
The game was tightly contested the entire way. Neither team held a lead of more than six points the entire way. The Dragons committed an uncharacteristic 16 turnovers in the game and shot just 37 percent from the floor. Fouch was the only Dragon in double figures with his 24-point performance. He was 6-for-6 from the line and moved into seventh place on the Dragons' career three-point list. Kazembe Abif scored eight points and had eight rebounds off the bench. Dartaye Ruffin had a team-high nine boards. Massenat had seven assists but committed five turnovers and was for 3-for-10 from the floor.
Kent State's Chris Evans led the Golden Flashes with 21 points and nine rebounds. Holt added 17 points, while Bryson Pope added 10. The Golden Flashes shot just 35 percent in the game, but was 7-for-9 from the line in the overtime period.
Drexel has a tough home opener on Thursday night, when Illinois State comes to the Daskalakis Athletic Center. ISU is picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference at 7 p.m.
