Women's Basketball Defeats Providence 60-50 in Season Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The women's basketball team opened the 2012-2013 season with a 60-50 victory over Providence on Friday night. Senior Hollie Mershon led the Dragons with 24 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Nicki Jones tallied ten points, which is a career-high for her time at Drexel.

The Dragons jumped out to an early lead and never trailed throughout the game. Mershon started the first half by sinking a three, followed by a two from Jones the next time up the court. Drexel's defense held Providence under 10 points with under seven minutes remaining in the first half. The Dragons ended the first half with 27 points tallied, including a three-pointer from freshman Meghan Creighton which marked her first career points as a Dragon.

Creighton finished the game with nine points. Taylor Wooton also tallied nine while Fiona Flanagan scored four points and grabbed four rebounds. Renee Johnson-Allen also added five boards for the Dragons.

Drexel maintained a two-digit lead over the Friars for most of the second half, the largest of which occurred with 11:23 remaining as the Dragons led by 18. Providence cut the lead to within nine with under a minute to go, but the Dragons held out to secure their first win of the season.

Drexel will be back in action when they host Saint Joseph's in their home opener at the Daskalakis Athletic Center next Wednesday, November 14. The Dragons and Hawks are set to tip off at 7:00 p.m.
