Wrestling Defeats Hofstra 22-16 to go 2-0 on the Weekend

Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel wrestling finished up the weekend 2-0 with a 22-16 victory over Hofstra at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center on Sunday. The win marks the first time Drexel has defeated Hofstra since 1997. The Dragons defeated VMI 24-14 on Saturday night as well.
While Hofstra jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two matches, Senior Frank Cimato got the Dragons on the board with a 10-7 decision at 141 against Hofstra's nationally ranked Luke Vaith to make the score 6-3. Hofstra's Matt Spataro secured a decision at 149 to put the Pride back up 9-3, but was followed by a strong performance from Austin Sommer, who pinned Hofstra's Jay Lysne at 1:57 in the 157 bout to tie the score up at 9-9.
Charles Aungst wrestled next at 165 and won on an injury default to Hofstra's Nick Terdick, putting Drexel up 15-9. Bryan Sternlieb and Brandon Palik also added strong performances for the Dragons. Sternlieb earned a 7-5 decision at 184 with a take-down late in the third period to win the match, while Palik secured a 13-1 major decision at 197.
Drexel is now 3-4, 1-0 CAA on the season while Hofstra dropped to 0-9, 0-1. The Dragons return to action on Thursday, December 6, when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to face Army at 7 p.m.
