PHILADELPHIA - The first regular season of Drexel varsity squash is in the books, as the Dragons concluded their schedule on Wednesday with a 9-0 blanking of Swarthmore. The Dragons lost just three games in the match, with seven of the nine competition matches being won by Drexel in three straight games.
The Dragons finished their first regular season at the Kline & Specter Squash Center with a 2-1 home record and a 7-9 mark overall.
Playing at the No. 4 position, Ben Bevan made quick work of James Bannon, finishing first with an 11-0, 11-5, 11-7 victory. Not far behind was Nick DiDonato, who won at the No. 2 position, 11-0, 11-3, 11-5.
Robert Steidle was next off the courts, winning at No. 6, 11-4, 11-2, 11-3. He was followed by No. 9 Omar Kabeer, who won in his first official match as a collegian, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8.
One of the better matches of the day went to Paul Jamrgowicz at No. 8. He handily went up 2-0 on Ben Mercado, 11-5, 11-7, but faltered in the third game. Down 6-1 early, Jamrgowicz rallied to make it a 7-6 contest, but would eventually fall, 8-11. He recovered in the fourth game to win 11-6 and clinch the match victory for Drexel.
Harshil Dakonia handled business with ease at No. 3, rolling to an 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 victory. Matt Schreffler was next off at No. 5, winning 11-3, 11-8, 11-9.
Playing his first-ever match at the top of the Dragons' ladder, Sebastian Dangond Gala was tested by Swarthmore's Tarit Rao Chakravorti, but grinded out an impressive 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 win.
The last player on the court for the Dragons was co-captain Kevin Sacherman at No. 7. Like Jamrgowicz earlier, Sacherman built a 2-0 lead, 11-7, 11-3, before Collin Smith challenged him in the third game. Smith controlled that game throughout, winning it 11-5. He then pushed the match to a fifth game with 11-6 victory in the fourth.
In that final game, however, Sacherman regained control. He went up 8-2 quickly before Smith crawled his way back into it with five of the next six points. At 9-7, Sacherman won a long point to push it to match point, then dispatched Smith with relative ease in the final point, winning 11-7.
The exhibition match went to Amey Khanolkar, who won his first match as a collegian, 11-5, 11-3, 11-7 over Prashant Arya.
