BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - In a defensive struggle that saw both teams flash momentary signs of offensive firepower, the Drexel women's basketball team fell to James Madison in overtime at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Thursday, 56-51. Hollie Mershon played every minute and led the Dragons with 17 points, but could not overcome stingy defense with time winding down in regulation as she attempted what would have been a game-winner.
The Dragons (11-11, 7-5) fell for the third-straight time at home, while James Madison (18-5, 9-3) won for the seventh time in eight games since falling to Drexel in Harrisonburg on January 12.
After falling behind 7-2 in the early going on Thursday, the Dragons put together an 11-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Tyler Hale had six of the 11 points, with Fiona Flanagan knocking down a three-pointer that capped the run and forced the Dukes to call timeout. Hale would finish the game with 11 points and nine rebounds, one board shy of her second double-double of the year. She added five assists, tying a season high.
Drexel, displaying its staunch defense which has it ranked near the top of the nation this season, held Madison without a point for 8:29 in the middle of the period before the Dukes went on an 8-0 run of its own to take the lead back. Marisa Crane nailed a three to put the Dragons back in front by one, and the teams exchanged buckets from there, with the Dragons trailed Madison by a point at halftime, 19-18.
Coming out of intermission, the Dukes fought for every loose ball, getting several second-chance looks and building a 32-24 cushion with 15:03 to play. From there, Drexel chipped away. Three pointers by Mershon and Kamile Nacickaite cut the lead to 34-30 with 13:06 to play. After JMU slowly rebuilt their eight-point advantage, Nacickaite sank another long-range bomb, followed closely by a mid-range jumper to make it a one-possession game.
With 6:31 remaining, Mershon got by her defender and banked home a lay-up to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Hale followed suit, putting the Dragons back in front. They would cap their second 11-0 run of the game when Mershon hit a long two-pointer to make the score 41-38 with 5:10 remaining.
Both teams had looks after that, but neither could get much going offensively as the Dukes scratched their way back even at 41 with 2:31 remaining when Kiara Francisco hit one of two free throws. Mershon's layup with 2:06 to play put Drexel back in front, but Tarik Hislop had an answer less than a minute later, knotting the score at 43.
Hislop finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, including eight in overtime.
Drexel had the last good look in regulation, with the ball out of bounds with 28 seconds to play and 21 on the shot clock. Mershon curled off a screen and had a contested look from about 10 feet on the right side, but the Dukes reacted well defensively and the shot was short. Madison's half-court heave was no good, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Drexel opened with two straight turnovers, resulting in four Madison points. The Dragons got back within two at 3:46 to go, but could not get over the hump. James Madison hit 8-of-16 free throws in the overtime. Drexel, meanwhile, earned just two free throw attempts the entire game - both coming with 41.6 seconds to play in the extra session, with Hale hitting one of two.
The Dragons fought to the end, cutting the score to 54-51 with 15 seconds to play, but Madison got the ball to Hislop, who was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line until two misses with the game decided and just three seconds remaining.
Drexel will now get back on the road for its next two games, starting Sunday at William & Mary. The Dragons and Tribe will tip things off at 2:00 p.m., with all the action carried live on DrexelDragons.com by Ari Bluestein.
