
Drexel Crew Posts Five Top-Times in Season Opener

Philadelphia - The Drexel men's and women's crew teams had a strong first showing in the spring opener held on Saturday on the home waters of the Schuylkill River. The Dragons placed first in five of six events beating the CAA's Delaware along with city-rivals Saint Joseph's and La Salle.
On the women's side, the freshmen eight boat with coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Meredith Bracken, Emily Gartland, Olivia Babiec, Bridget Pfeifer, Amanda Kleuser, Joy Yingling, Jayme Batcher and bow Elise Levito recorded a first place time of 7:07.0. Delaware's 'A' boat came in second with a time of 7:21.7.
Caitlin Meehan coxed the John A. Daskalakis boat to another Drexel first-place finish with stroke Asiya Mahmud, Mallory Sykes, Elizabeth Campanella, Emily Coyle, Amanda O'Malley, Alyssa Leahy, Jackie Bender and bow Colleen Delaney. The women's second varsity eight shell clocked in at 6:45.2 followed by Saint Joseph's, Delaware, Drexel's 'B' boat and La Salle respectively.
The women's varsity eight dropped a close race to Saint Joseph's finishing second with a time of 7:00.3. The Marlene Buckley boat featured coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Sierra Baca, Elizabeth Bratton, Julia Jackson, Elizabeth Daugherty, Juliana DeMarici, Samantha Cowan, Mollie Cusack and bow Alexa Antonioli.
For the men, the second varsity eight 'A' boat kicked off action clocking in a time of 6:12.2 for first place. The Annette Pennoni boat, in lane three, included coxswain Marc Smith, stroke John Pieper, Marcus DeMarici, Martin Khait, Milos Rujevic, Kevin Rorabaugh, Ryan Mallgrave, Timothy Drake and bow Will Masters. The men's second varsity 'B' boat followed with a time of 6:29.6. Jaclyn Durkin coxed the Vince Vidas Boat ahead of La Salle along with stroke Adam Cordi, Pete Eyrich, Filip Topalovic, Paul Wisniowski, Nick Buyse, Brian Kissam, Butch Eribal and bow Andrew Weinstein.
Randall Lee coxed the varsity eight boat with teammates Vanja Busic, Sebastian Ryan, Lorenzo Albala, Kurt Linton, Aleksandar Radovic, Marko Durica, Brian Timlin and bow Michael Faust. The boat clocked in at 5:56.8, while La Salle recorded a second-place time of 5:58.6.
The freshmen eight dominated in the men's final race of the day. The Vince Vidas boat clocked in a first-place time of 6:10.1, which included coxswain Victoria Kenion, stroke Dean Hill, Brian McCabe, Philip Byers, Cameron Staines, James Byrne, Casimir Czworkowski, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Christian Ladd.
The Dragons will return to the water on March 17 against Villanova and Franklin & Marshall. The races will take place from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
