Former Drexel basketball standout Bashir Mason will be introduced today as the new head coach at Wagner University. Mason, who graduated from Drexel in 2007, will become the youngest head coach in Division I when he offically takes the helm of the Seahawks' program at a press conference to be held today.
Mason spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Wagner under Danny Hurley. Hurley left Wagner to take the head coaching position at Rhode Island. Over the last two years at Wagner, Mason helped transform a program that won just five games the year before he arrived into one that recorded a school-record 25 victories last season.
Mason began his collegiate coaching career in 2008 when he took an assistant position at Marist College. He was an assistant to Chuck Martin, who spent three seasons on the Drexel sidelines as an assistant under Bruiser Flint.
Mason graduated with a degree in sport management. He was a four-year starter at the point under Flint and was a four-time member of the Colonial Athletic Association All-Defensive Team. He was the first player in CAA history to be named the CAA's Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman following the 2003-2004 season. Mason ranks second all-time at Drexel in steals and third in assists. He also scored 1,126 points in his career at the school.
