Philadelphia, Pa. - The Drexel men's basketball team held its annual postseason banquet on Tuesday night at the Drexel University Recreation Center. Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year Bruiser Flint and his staff handed out awards and celebrated a record-breaking season by the Dragons. Samme Givens and Frantz Massenat were named co-Most Valuable Players for the Dragons, who won the CAA regular-season title for the first time.
Givens, a senior, became just the third player in Drexel history to score more than 1,000 points and grab more than 1,000 rebounds. He finished his career with 1,226 points, the 18th highest total in school history and his 1,059 rebounds rank him third behind Drexel legends Malik Rose and Bob Stephens. Givens was a Second Team All-CAA selection as a junior and a senior and was the recipient of the team's “Sweep” Award, named for Stephens, as the team's top rebounder.
Massenat, just a sophomore, had an outstanding season running the point for the Dragons. The Ewing, N.J. native led the Dragons in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game. He also led the Colonial Athletic Association in three-point percentage at .450 and in assists per game at 4.8. The team's ironman, Massenat started every game for the second straight season and played 35.8 minutes per game. He also earned the Assists Award after picking up 173 assists this season.
Juniors Daryl McCoy and Derrick Thomas shared the Dragon “D” Award, which goes to the team's top defensive player. McCoy was one of the top interior defenders in the CAA, while Thomas was the team's top perimeter defender. Both players were a big reason Drexel allowed just 56.1 points per game, the fifth lowest total in all of Division I.
Freshman standout Damion Lee was given the Samuel D. Cozen Award which is awarded to the most improved player. Lee made an immediate impact in his rookie season, averaging 12 points and shooting .375 from behind the arc. He was named the CAA's Rookie of the Year. The Donald Shank Spirit & Dedication Award was given to sophomore Jake Lerner. Fellow junior Steve Manojlovic earned the team's academic award. He is an environmental science major and has a 3.59 grade-point average.
The Dragons finished the season with a school-record 29 wins and only seven losses. Drexel advanced to the National Invitation Tournament for the fifth time under Head Coach Bruiser Flint and advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals with wins against Central Florida and Northern Iowa. It was the first time in school history the team won two postseason games in the same season.
