Drexel Crew Earns First Team Bid to the 2012 IRA Regatta

Philadelphia – Drexel University is one of 18 institutions selected to compete at the 2012 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship, which is comprised of the nation's top crew programs on Thursday, May 31 through June 2. Director of Rowing Paul Savell will guide four boats including the men's varsity eight, the men's second varsity eight, the men's freshmen eight and the men's open four in the three-day regatta hosted on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
The Dragons will take the water along with Boston University, Brown University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, George Washington University, Gonzaga University, Harvard University, Northeastern University, Princeton University, Stanford University, Syracuse University, U.S. Naval Academy, University of California- Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin and Yale University.
“This is a huge step for our team,” said Director of Rowing Paul Savell. “The three extra weeks of training we are doing to prepare for this race is invaluable. We will look forward to lining up with the fastest teams in the country.”
The men's team has had one of the strongest spring seasons. Together, Drexel Crew finished second overall at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. At Dad Vails, the men's varsity eight won a bronze medal, while the men's second varsity eight recorded fourth place in the finals. The men's freshmen eight took home a silver medal.
Last time out, Drexel's men's varsity four won a bronze medal at the 2011 IRA National Championship, which marked the best overall finish in school history for the Dragons at the IRA National Championship.
