Henley-on-Thames, England – Drexel men's varsity eight boat concluded one of its best seasons in school history at the 2012 Henley Royal Regatta. The Dragons, making their first appearance in the prestigious regatta, were ultimately unable to surpass Harvard University's undefeated lightweight eight in final half-mile of the Temple Challenge Cup, but nonetheless capped a strong season overall.
Harvard University's lightweight eight, the 2012 IRA National Champion, was able to keep its record unblemished with a top-time of 7.20 in the opening round of the Temple Challenge Cup. The Crimson clocked in at 2.02 at the barrier and then 3.26 at the fawley, before crossing the finish line in the two-lane 2,112-meter course. Harvard won the Temple Challenge Cup back in 2002 and will look to be the program's third lightweight boat to capture the title at Henley.
The men's eight captured five first-place victories, a bronze medal at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta and helped Drexel's rowing program earn its first invitation to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships throughout the season. The Dragons will return to University City as Drexel's only men's varsity eight crew to compete at Henley, as well as bringing home the first-place trophy from England's Reading Town Regatta.
The Lois Krall boat featured coxswain Randall Lee (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./ William Tennent), stroke Kurt Linton (Linwood, N.J./ St. Augustine Prep), Paul Wisniowski (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle), Michael Faust (Northfield, N.J./ St. Augustine Prep) , Lorenzo Albala (Elkins Park, Pa./ Boston Latin), Sebastian Ryan (Brooklyn, N.Y./ Xavier), Ryan Mallgrave (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Township), Vanja Busic (Zadar, Croatia/Gimnazija Juraj Barakovic) and bow Will Masters (Somers Point, N.J./ Mainland Regional).
