Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel Wrestling defeated Sacred Heart, 47-9, on Saturday night. The victory moved the Dragons to 6-9 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 0-7.
Sacred Heart had jumped out to an early 9-0 lead over the Dragons when senior Frank Cimato took the mat and earned a win-by-fall in the 141 bout to make the score 9-6. The Pioneers then forfeited the next three matches at 149, 157, and 165, which gave the Dragons a 24-9 lead. Kevin Matyas then added a pin over Sacred Heart's Sam Sheppard in the 174 bout.
Drexel picked up another win by forfeit in the 184 bout, which Brandon Palik followed by earning a 20-3 tech fall in the final non-forfeited match of the evening. The 285 match was also forfeited by Sacred Heart to finish out the night.
Earlier in the day, multiple wrestlers competed in the Messiah Open in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Sophomore Franco Ferriana finished first in the 133 division, followed by teammate David Pearce who took second. Freshmen Matthew Cimato and Jason Fugiel also earned first place finishes in the 149 and 157 divisions respectively. Both Cimato and Fugiel had two pins each on the day.
Freshman Joseph Giorgio finished third at 285 while going 5-1 overall. Pearce, Nicholas Maccini, and Michael Paccione added a win-by-fall a piece. Teammate William Long also earned a major decision during his competition at 157.
The Dragons return to action on Friday, February 1 when they will host conference opponent Boston at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
