Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel rallied from a 15-point deficit with 4:22 to play and had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Delaware hung on for a 66-64 victory. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Dragons.
Drexel (8-12, 4-4) had three chances in the closing seconds to go ahead, but just could not climb all the way back. With the Dragons down just one at 65-64, Delaware's (9-11, 4-3) Jamelle Hagins missed a short turnaround in the paint which gave Drexel the ball with 44 seconds on the clock. Drexel called time and after play resumed, Frantz Massenat missed a jumper, but Daryl McCoy came up with the offensive board and got a fresh shot clock. The Dragons called another timeout and got a good look from Massenat with five seconds left. He missed, but McCoy came up with a board but missed a contested lay-up with three seconds left. The Dragons were forced to foul and Kyle Anderson made one of two from the line with 2.6 seconds remaining to give Delaware a two-point advantage. Drexel got the ball in bounds and Massenat heaved a shot from beyond half court that came up short as the Hens won for the first time in the DAC since January of 2008.
The Dragons trailed 64-49 when Devon Saddler fed Josh Brinkley for a lay-in. That was the last field goal the Blue Hens would score in the game as the Dragons chipped away at the Hens' lead. Damion Lee, who finished with a career-high 30 points, scored seven straight in a span of 44 seconds to make it a 64-58 game. However, Lee was called for a foul away from the ball, his fifth and disqualifying foul, with 2:41 to play. The Dragons continued to chip away and cut the lead to two with just under two minutes left after a pair of Frantz Massenat free throws and a Massenat jumper. Delaware finally broke the 13-0 run when Jarvis Threatt made one of two from the line to put UD back up by three. Drexel raced down the court and Massenat was again fouled and made both shots to trim the deficit to 65-64.
Drexel got off to another slow start as Delaware raced out to an 11-2 lead in the early going. The lead swelled to as many as 16 points in the first half as the Delaware big men were having their way early. The Hens forwards had 14 of the team's first 21 points. Drexel was able to cut into the lead later in the half and trailed by just seven (31-24) at halftime despite shooting just 32 percent from the floor.
Lee finished with a career-high 30 points, 20 of those coming in the second half. He shot 6-for-9 in the second half. The sophomore was 7-for-8 from the line. Massenat finished with 15 points and was the only other Dragon in double digits scoring. McCoy grabbed 10 rebounds in a losing cause.
Kyle Anderson led four Hens in double figures with 15 points. Saddler added 13, while Hagins and Brinkley chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Delaware shot 51 percent from the floor and held the Dragons 34 percent shooting. The Blue Hens outrebounded Drexel, 41-32.
Drexel will be back on the road for the next two games, beginning on Thursday at George Mason. That game can be seen live on the NBC Sports Network at 7 p.m.
