PHILADELPHIA- The Drexel women's tennis team defeated Monmouth in the last match of their fall campaign, 7-0. The Dragons have now successfully competed in the Saint Joseph's and Cissie Leary Invitationals as well as the ITA Northeast Regionals. They end the fall season having won both of their scheduled dual meets, against Rider and now Monmouth.
In doubles play, the Dragons made it a team goal to hold serve and break as consistently as possible while playing aggressively at the net. Nicole Pivonka and freshman Fiorella Coria kicked off the day with a solid 8-1 win. Next up, Erin Bowsher and freshman Lea Winkler secured the doubles point and took down their opponents, 8-2. Zeynep Mafa and Alex Bell gave the team their third victory by going 8-1.
Throughout each match, the women worked to apply lessons and techniques picked up throughout the fall season. Each singles player took her match in straight sets, largely due to the offensive drive and strategic court positioning that has been encouraged and implemented throughout the season. No.1 Mafa took down the competition in a 6-2, 6-0 decision. Pivonka then defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Next up, Winkler played through to a 6-0, 6-1 win, followed by Bowsher with another win going 6-1, 6-2. Coria brought home the No. 5 win for Drexel in a 6-1, 6-3 decision, and finally, Bell swept Monmouth 6-0, 6-0.
Drexel tennis will return to the courts for spring season competition. An announcement will be made when the schedule is released.
