NAVY RESULTS GEORGETOWN RESULTS
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Drexel men's squash team split two matches on its first day of competition for the 2013-14 season, falling in a close match to Navy, 5-4, before blanking Georgetown, 9-0. Both matches were played at the Naval Academy.
The Dragons opened their season against the Midshipmen, narrowly falling by a 5-4 count. Four of the five Drexel losses were in three sets, although all three were highly competitive, with the Drexel player netting at least 10 points in a game at least once in all four matches. A fifth setback, Noel Solomon's first collegiate match at No. 6, went four sets.
Ibrahim Bakir at No. 1, Michael Thompson at No. 3, Joey Gingold at No. 7 and Nat Fry at No. 9 all won their matches against the Midshipmen. For Thompson and Fry, their outings were the first of their collegiate career. Thompson outlasted Navy's Colin Barry in five sets, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10, while Fry won in four sets over Randy Beck, 1-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-3.
Things went much more smoothly for the Dragons against Georgetown, as all nine Drexel players won in straight sets over their Hoya counterparts. Bakir, Justin Singh and Thompson held down the top three spots, while Sebastian Dangond Gala, Solomon, and Ben Bevan won in the middle of Drexel's ladder. Fry, Harshil Dokania and freshman August Crofton won in spots No. 7, 8 and 9 to seal the sweep for Drexel.
Drexel will now play its next four matches at home at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. That will begin on November 22 when the Dragons host Franklin & Marshall at 5:00 p.m.
