NORFOLK, Va. - The Drexel men's soccer team will return to the NCAA Tournament for a second-consecutive season when they visit Old Dominion in a first-round game on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. The Dragons, who are making consecutive tournament appearances for the first time in program history, will be searching for the squad's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory when they go up against their old conference rival Monarchs.
Drexel earned its bid to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dragons won the regular season and tournament championships, becoming just the second Drexel team to win both titles in a single season since joining the CAA in 2002 (2008-09 women's basketball). Drexel has lost just two games in CAA play over the past two seasons, capturing both regular season championships during that time. The Dragons handed No. 21 William & Mary its first shutout since September 13 in blanking the Tribe, 1-0, in the CAA title game on Saturday afternoon.
Old Dominion will be returning to the tournament for a fourth-consecutive season, and a 10th time in 12 years. The Monarchs finished with the No. 2 seed in their first year in Conference-USA, earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs are led by Tim Hopkinson, whose 10 goals and 24 points pace the team.
These two teams were together in the CAA from 2002-12. The Monarchs controlled the overall series, with Drexel winning just two of 13 matchups and earning three draws. Most recently, however, the Dragons announced their presence as a team to be reckoned with in the CAA when they knocked off then-No. 11 Old Dominion, 4-1, in the teams' CAA opener last season. Michele Pataia had two goals in that game with Mark Donohue adding one. Hopkinson scored the lone goal for the Monarchs.
Drexel has gotten its fair share of individual awards this week in the wake of winning the CAA Tournament. Tal Bublil was named the tournament Most Outstanding Performer, joining Joaquin del Rosario, Tyler Afflerbach and Ken Tribbett on the All-Tournament Team. Bublil also earned a spot on the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week for his defensive efforts in the CAA Tournament. Del Rosario was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week, while Bublil shared the league's Defender of the Week recognition and Afflerbach was named the Soccer Six's Rookie of the Week for a fifth time this season.
The Dragons and Monarchs will kick things off at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday from the ODU Soccer Complex in Norfolk. The winner of that game will go on to face the overall No. 6 seed Georgetown Hoyas in the District of Columbia on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
