Davidson, N.C. – Frantz Massenat tied a career-high with 25 points and Chris Fouch scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half as Drexel defeated Davidson, 72-58. It was the fourth straight win for the Dragons, who are now 7-2 this season.
Drexel led from wire to wire in the game, but the Wildcats (4-7) made it a game in the second half. The Wildcats cut the lead to six on four occasions in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't get any closer. With 8:12 left, the Wildcats went to the line down six, but Jordan Barham missed both free throw attempts. The Dragons put the game out of reach when Dartaye Ruffin fed Fouch in the corner for a three-pointer. That put the Dragons ahead 59-48 with 4:57 to play. Drexel made its free throws down the stretch, sinking six of eight in the last two minutes.
Drexel's defense played well in the early going as the Dragons held the Wildcats without a field goal for the first 11:22 of the game. Davidson missed its first 12 shots from the floor and scored its first seven points from the charity stripe. Brian Sullivan, who scored a team-high 11 points in the first half, drained a three-pointer with 8:38 left in the half to break the drought. Drexel led by as many as 14 in the half before Davidson scored a pair of buckets in the final 40 seconds to head to the locker room down by 10 at 37-27. Davidson had 11 of its points from the free throw line. Drexel shot 41 percent in the half and was 4-for-7 from deep. Massenat had 11 in the half and was 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Eight different Dragons scored a basket in the first half.
Massenat was 6-for-10 from the floor and scored 11 of his points from the line. It was the third time in his career he scored 25 points. He also grabbed seven boards and had two three-pointers. Fouch finished with 17 points after going just 1-for-6 from the floor in the first half. He had two three-pointers as well as the Dragons were 6-for-12 from behind the arc. Drexel's defense held Davidson to just 33 percent shooting in the game and the Wildcats were just 3-for-22 from deep.
Ruffin had another solid game on the glass for the Dragons. The senior had 11 rebounds. Kazembe Abif added nine caroms as the CAA's leading rebounding duo continued to control the boards. Drexel outrebounded Davidson, 47-38. Freddie Wilson made his first appearance in a Drexel uniform and contributed seven points and five rebounds off the bench.
Sullivan led Davidson with 14 points. He was held to just four field goals in 15 attempts as the length of the Dragons' defense seemed to affect him. Tyler Kalinoski had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan Barham added 11. Davidson had its chances, but shot just 55 percent from the line in the game.
The Dragons have a short turnaround this week. Drexel will visit Saint Joseph's on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. That game can be seen live on The Comcast Network.
