Philadelphia, Pa. – Saint Joseph's shot 58 percent in the second half and went on to a 75-55 victory against Drexel in Hagan Arena. The win snapped Drexel's (7-3) four game winning streak. The Hawks (5-4) snapped a two game losing skid.
The Hawks went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to break a tie and take the lead for good. DeAndre Bembry started the run with a three-pointer as the shot clock expired at the 16:04 mark. Two possessions later, Chris Wilson nailed a three-pointer from deep as the shot clock ticked down again, putting the Hawks up 38-32. Ronald Roberts and Halil Kanacevic each added buckets as Saint Joseph's increased the lead to double digits. Drexel was able to get the lead down to six points after a pair of Tavon Allen free throws, but Saint Joseph's rattled off the next five points and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Kanacevic had a huge game for the Hawks. The senior scored a career-high 27 points and was 12-for-13 from the floor. He also had a game-high 14 rebounds and four assists. Bembry added 18 points. Wilson and Langston Galloway added 11. The Hawks dominated the glass (42-35) and had 12 offensive rebounds.
Allen led Drexel with 20 points. The sophomore, who was 7-for-13 from the floor, was the only Dragon in double figures scoring. Rodney Williams grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, tying his career high. Drexel struggled shooting for most of the night. The Dragons made just 38 percent of its shots and went 0-for-11 from behind the arc. It didn't get much better from the line as the Dragons were just 13-for-25 from the charity stripe.
Drexel jumped out to an early lead in the game and led by as many as nine points in the first half at 23-14. However, the Dragons had their chances to increase the lead, but went cold in the final four minutes of the half. Drexel missed the front end of two one-and-ones as the Hawks went on a 9-2 run late in the half. Bembry had five points in the final 1:15. Drexel was able to go to the break with a four-point lead after Fouch drove the lane and got his lay-in to fall as time expired.
The Dragons return home for their final game before the holiday break. Drexel and Saint Francis (Pa.) will play at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
