2/10/2013 9:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia, Pa. - Drexel's defense held James Madison to just 12 points in the first half and the Dragons went on to a 60-48 victory on Sunday night in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Junior Frantz Massenat led the Dragons with 14 points including the 1,000th point of his career.
Drexel (10-14, 6-6 CAA) fell behind 9-4 in the early going after Ron Curry made one of two from the line. However, the Dragons defense tightened and held the Dukes (14-12, 8-5 CAA) without a field goal for almost 12 minutes. The Dragons ended the half on a 19-3 run to take a 23-12 lead at intermission. JMU shot just 28 percent in the first half as Drexel allowed the Dukes just five field goals in the first 20 minutes.
The Dragons extended their lead to as many as 17 points in the second half after a 7-0 run midway through the half. Tavon Allen keyed the run with five straight points, including his second three-pointer of the game. James Madison didn't cut the lead under 10 points until the final minute, when Charles Cooke hit a pair of treys.
Massenat's last free throw left him at 1,001 points in his career, making him the 33rd Dragon to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Derrick Thomas added 13 points as the Dragons won for just the third time at the DAC this season. Drexel had solid efforts off the bench tonight from Allen and Aquil Younger. Allen finished with eight points before leaving the game with an injury. Younger had six points, three rebounds and two steals. Daryl McCoy led the club with nine rebounds. Drexel outrebounded the Dukes, 35-26 and took care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers.
JMU was led by Cooke's 16 points. Rayshawn Goins added 11, while Devon Moore had 10 points. The Dukes finished the game shooting 38 percent from the floor.
Drexel continues its four-game home stand on Thursday night, when George Mason visits the DAC. The Dragons defeated the Patriots earlier this season in Fairfax. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. and can be seen live on The CBS Sports Network.
