Women's Squash Finishes Season 20th in the Nation

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Playing in the Walker Cup Division of the 2013 Collegiate Squash Association Women's Team Championships, the Drexel women's squash team won its opening match on Friday, edging Mt. Holyoke, 5-4. Laura Rahauser, playing at No. 4, won the clinching match for the Dragons in five dramatic sets to help Drexel advance to the semifinals. The Dragons then fell to Wesleyan in the semifinals, 7-2 and Hamilton in the consolation, 8-1.
Drexel, which finished the season ranked 20th overall after its performance in the Championships, was voted the nation's Most Improved Team by the Collegiate Squash Association. The Dragons finished just their second season as a varsity program with a record of 8-11, winning four times as many matches as they did in 2011-12.
The Dragons got outstanding production out of the bottom of its ladder on Friday, winning points at the Nos. 6 through 9 position. They also got a win at No. 10, where Anna Schmiedicke defeated Catherine Ryan 11-8, 11-7, 13-11.
At No. 9, Davila Thompson rolled to a 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 win over Laura Reikes. Atiqah Shahrin, a senior playing in her final matches with Drexel, held off Zianger Fei in three sets. Fei fought hard in all three, but could not match Shahrin,who won 11-6, 11-8, 11-8.
Courtney Sabo needed four sets to take down Mt. Holyoke's Susannah Born at No. 8. After edging Born in the first set 11-9, Sabo dropped a heartbreaker in the second, 12-14. Sabo rallied from there, however, persevering with convincing 11-3, 11-1 victories in the final two sets. Disha Thahryamal took out Elyssa Taylor in three sets at No. 6, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3.
With Mt. Holyoke controlling play at the top of the ladder, the overall match was tied 4-4 with just Laura Rahauser and her opponent, Samantha Rosado, on the court. Rahauser claimed an 11-6 win in the first set, but faltered in the second, as Rosado won 11-4. The third set went back to Rahauser, who won 11-8 after holding off a Rosado charge. In the fourth, the two competitors battled back and forth, but Rosado managed to come out on top with an 11-9 win. Fortuantely for the Dragons, the pair continued trading sets in the fifth, as Rahauser won 11-6 to complete her win and the Dragons' overall victory.
On Saturday, the top-seeded Wesleyan team held off a determined Drexel squad, winning 7-2 to advance to the C Division final for the second consecutive season. Hamilton then took care of the Dragons on Sunday, winning 8-1 in the 19/20 match.
