2/21/2013 9:46:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Newark, Del. - Frantz Massenat's runner was blocked as time expired as Drexel fell in double overtime at Delaware, 73-71. The Hens (15-13, 10-5) made one of two at the line with 3.7 seconds left, but missed the second setting up Massenat's chance to tie it. He drove the length of the court but Jamelle Hagins made a controversial block to seal it. The Dragons fell to 11-16 and 7-8 in CAA play.
In the second overtime period, Delaware took the lead for good with 362 seconds left when Terrell Rogers made a pair of free throws. The Dragons came down and called timeout. After play resumed, the Hens knocked the ball into the backcourt. Massenat grabbed it and tried to get Drexel in its offense. Lee got the ball and just missed a three-pointer. Hagins grabbed the rebound and made one of two from the line to give Delaware a 73-71 lead, setting up Massenat's attempt to tie it.
Drexel went ahead for the first time in the game with 3:41 left in regulation when Damion Lee hit a three-pointer. The lead extended to four after a Massenat three-pointer with 1:53. However, those would be the last points the Dragons would score in the second half. Devon Saddler trimmed the lead to two on a short jumper and was fouled. He missed on the three-point opportunity as Drexel still led, 52-50. Drexel came down and just missed on a put-back before Daryl McCoy was called for his fifth foul with 1:09 to play. Hagins was sent to the line and made both free throws to tie it. Each team had its chances in the final minute. Saddler missed a jumper that was rebounded by Drexel and then Massenat had two chances for the Dragons. The first one was blocked with 1.7 seconds left and his jumper as time expired from a tough angle on the baseline came up long.
In overtime, the Hens got an early three-point lead, but Drexel tied it on a three-point play midway through the period. Thomas added a pair of free throws to put Drexel up by a point with :47 left, but Saddler made one of two free throws to tie it with 39 ticks left on the clock to even the score at 60-60. Tavon Allen had a chance to win it with a long three-pointer with :07 left, but his shot bounced off the rim. Jarvis Threatt attempted a half court after he grabbed the rebounds, but it too came up short as the teams went to a second overtime.
Delaware scored 29 of its 73 points at the free throw line, including 15 free throws made in the overtime periods. McCoy, Kazembe Abif, Dartaye Ruffin and even Goran Pantovic, who played a career-high 31 minutes all fouled out. On the other end, Drexel shot just 21 times from the line. Lee led the Dragons with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick Thomas scored 19 points, including nine in the overtime periods and the final four points of the game for the Dragons. Massenat had 17 points and six assists. The Dragons held the Hens to just 29 percent in the second half after making 52 percent in the first 20 minutes. Drexel committed just five turnovers in the game. Three of those came in the opening minutes.
Devon Saddler had a game-high 31 points and was 11-for-15 from the line. Jamelle Hagins added 14 points and 18 rebounds.
The Dragons face Towson on Saturday afternoon at noon in the Towson Center.
