NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Drexel men's squash team fell in the first round of the National Team Championships on Friday, 5-4 to Wesleyan. The Dragons were playing in the C Division of the championships, where they were ranked No. 19 coming into the weekend. Wesleyan was No. 22.
As has been the case for much of the season, Drexel got strong play from the top of its lineup, where the Dragons won three of the top four spots. Justin Singh, playing at the No. 1 spot, won in four sets over John Steele, 11-8, 14-12, 6-11, 11-3.
Binura Jayasuriya, playing at No. 3, won in straight sets over Michael DeLalio, 11-5, 11-5, 11-7. At No. 4, Joey Gingold outlasted Daniel Sneed. After winning the first two sets 11-6, 14-12, Gingold fell in the next two, 4-11, 3-11 to even things up. In the fifth, though, Gingold regrouped and held off a determined Sneed, 11-8.
Finally, at the No. 6 spot, Mark Kauf won in straight sets over Ethan Moritz, 11-6, 12-10, 11-4. Unfortunately for Drexel, that was all they could put together as they lost the bottom three spots and Wesleyan moved onto the C Division semifinals.
On Saturday, the Dragons went up against Hamilton, a team they had lost to in a close 5-4 decision earlier in the season. This time, Drexel came out strong. The Dragons won eight of the nine matches, including the top seven spots. Playing at the top four positions, Singh, Ibrahim Bakir, Jayasuriya and Gingold each won in straight sets. Sebastian Dangond lost his first set, but rebounded to win the next three at No. 5.
Mark Kauf improved his record on the weekend to 2-0 when he won in four sets at No. 6, 11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6. Ben Bevan won in four sets at No. 7, while Nick DiDonato outlasted Hamilton's Austin Engros in a dramatic five-set thriller at No. 9, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 14-12.
Finally on Sunday, the Dragons were bested by Amherst in the 21st place match, 5-4. Jayasuriya moved to 3-0 on the weekend, while Bakir also won his match at No. 2. Ben Bevan and Nick DiDonato were also victorious, but the Dragons could not win five set matches at No. 1, No. 4 or No. 7 as Amherst snuck away with the victory.
