Men's Novice Eight Wins Grand Final at the Occoquan Sprints

Fairfax, Va. – Drexel Crew advanced all six boats to the grand finals and finished top-three in five of six events at the 2013 Occoquan Sprints on Sunday. The men's freshmen eight place first in the grand final, while the men's varsity and second varsity eights finished second overall. The women's second varsity eight captured second place in the grand final behind Navy along with a third-place finish by the freshmen eight shell. The women's varsity eight took sixth-place overall.
The men's novice eight recorded the top-time in the second heat with a time of 5:32.00. The Dragons outlasted UNC, Michigan, VCU, Maryland and Carnegie Melon advancing to the grand final. In the finals, the Peggy Greenawalt boat crossed the finish line first with a winning time of 5:09.80. Michigan followed at 5:15.40 followed by Grand Valley, UNC and two Michigan boats. The freshmen eight shell consisted of coxswain Christopher Henderson, stroke Daniel Dollin, Mikulas Sum, Nicholas Capaldi, Michael DiLucca, Dave Hanrahan, Daniel Palombo, Daniel Pyle and bow Lawrence Lindawan.
The men's second varsity eight boat placed second overall with a time of 5:27.71 in the first final. Michigan captured first place with a time of 5:26.80. Victoria Kenion coxed the Joseph Greipp boat with stroke Marko Durica, Milos Rujevic, James Byrne, Paul Wisniowski, Ian Luetzow, Christian Ladd, Grigorios Papadourakis and bow Brian McCabe past UNC, Grand Valley and La Salle.
The men's varsity eight stopped the clock first in the first heat with a time of 5:27.50 and secured a spot in the grand final. The Dragons outlasted Grand Valley, Washington an Carnegie Mellon. In the finals, the men finished behind Michigan with a time of 5:18.24. The Wolverines earned first place with a time of 5:15.80. The Lois Krall boat featured coxswain Marc Smith, stroke Sebastian Ryan, Vanja Busic, Aleksandar Radovic, Lorenzo Albala, Kurt Linton, Ryan Mallgrave, Michael Faust and bow Casimir Czworkowski. The Dragons crossed the finish line before Grand Valley, UNC, George Mason and Washington College.
The women's freshmen eight shell recorded the second-fastest time of 6:35.20 in the third heat and advanced to the grand final. North Carolina won the heat with a time of 6:29.68. The Dragons finished before Delaware and George Mason. In the finals, Grand Valley and North Carolina took the top-two finishes, while Drexel crossed the finish line at 6:11.29 for third place overall. The Marlene Buckley boat consisted of coxswain Rachel Bowen, stroke Rose Ehrlich, Julie McGlynn, Caitlin Bubel, Rebecca McCool, Jordan Marinchak, Elisabeth Wagner, Taylor Brady and bow Kate Wilchek. Drexel outlasted Navy and Bucknell in the grand final.
The women's second varsity eight penciled in a top-time of 6:08.0 in the second heat and secured a lane in the grand finals. Drexel crossed the finish line before Grand Valley, Delaware, Duquesne, La Salle and Washington College. In the final event, Navy stopped the clock at 5:48.80 followed by the Dragons at 5:51.17. Coxswain Catherine Hamilton guided the second-place Maria Papadakis shell along with stroke Amanda Kleuser, Emily Gartland, Jayme Batcher, Elizabeth Daugherty, Victoria King, Alyssa Leahy, Amanda Dargay and bow Elise Levito. The Dragons finished before Grand Valley, Delaware, Temple and Bucknell.
The women's varsity eight posted the second-best time in the second heat with a time of 6:15.03 behind Grand Valley at 6:14.00. The Dragons advanced to the grand finals and place ahead of Duquesne, George Mason and Saint Mary's College of Maryland. In the finals, the Marlene Buckley II boat stopped the clock third with a time of 6:02.01. Navy, Bucknell and Temple scored the top-three times. Drexel's shell featured coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Elizabeth Campanella, Colleen Delaney, Kayla Wroblesky, Sierra Baca, Julia Jackson, Mollie Cusack, Olivia Babiec and bow Bridget Pfeifer.
