Piscataway, N.J. – The Drexel women's soccer team opened the 2013 season on Friday night at Rutgers and lost a 1-0 decision to the Scarlet Knights.
The teams played a defensive oriented first half and went to intermission scoreless. Each team managed just two shots on goal and each goalkeeper made one save.
Rutgers finally broke the scoreless tie early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Rutgers' Rachel Cole sent a ball along the right side to Madison Tiernan, who fired a shot from inside the box past Eve Badana into the back left corner. That proved to be the only goal of the contest as the Scarlet Knights won their 11th straight home opener.
Badana had two saves in the contest. Jessica Janosz also had two saves as she recorded the shutout for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights outshot Drexel 8-3 in the match. Sam Greenfield, Megan Hammaker, and Civanni Moss each had a shot for the Dragons.
The Dragons will open their home season on Monday night as they host Marist at 7:00 p.m. at Vidas Field. Video broadcast for the game will be available through the Dragons Game Central.
