PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's soccer team fell to Penn, 1-0, in double overtime on Friday at Penn Park. The Dragons are now 3-3-1 while the Quakers improve to 3-0 on the season.
The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams battled to get on the board first. The Dragons took two shots to the Quakers' one before the half ended.
In the second half, both teams had multiple chances to score. Penn took four shots in the span of five minutes but was unsuccessful. Melissa Chapman got off an attempt for the Dragons but it went high and a few minutes later Lauren Stollar took a shot that also went above the crossbar. In the 71st minute, Christine Stevenson made another attempt for the Dragons that went wide of the goal.
The Quakers took a corner kick with less than 15 minutes to play that set up a shot from Penn's Kerry Scalora. Drexel keeper Eve Badana was pulled out to challenge the shot, but a team save was recorded on a block by Abby Toner.
As time wound down, Badana made two crucial saves to keep the Quakers scoreless. With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, the Quakers' Jazmyne Simmons got off decent attempt but it was just high of the goal, sending the game to overtime.
Despite outshooting the Quakers 4-2 in the first overtime, the Dragons were still unable to get on the board. With less than 30 seconds to go, Badana made another save off a shot from Penn's Brianna Rano to send the game to double overtime.
Chapman was able to get off a solid shot in the 101st minute but it was saved by Penn goalie Kalijah Terilli. Penn came back with two more shots, the second of which was blocked by Alyssa Findlay. Despite the Dragons' effort, Scalora put the ball into the upper part of the goal from outside the box in the 108th minute to give the Quakers the victory.
Badana totaled six saves in the losing effort, while Terilli picked up three. The Quakers outshot the Dragons 15-11.
Next up, the Dragons will travel to Colorado to take on Colorado College on Friday, Sept. 20, and then Air Force Academy on Sunday, Sept. 22.
