Philadelphia, Pa. – Chris Fouch and Frantz Massenat combined for 58 points as Drexel survived double overtime and defeated Northeastern, 93-88. The duo scored 24 of Drexel's 26 points in the two extra periods as Drexel (9-6) evened its Colonial Athletic Association record at 1-1.
Fouch opened the second overtime period with a bucket that gave the Dragons the lead for good. Later in the period, Fouch was at it again. With the Dragons clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute of the stanza, Fouch nailed a long three-pointer to put Drexel ahead 90-85 with just :36 left on the clock. He added one of two free throws with seven seconds left to give him a career-high 31 points on the day.
Drexel appeared to have the game won in regulation and in the first overtime period, but both times, Northeastern's (4-12, 1-1) Demetrius Pollard came up big. The Dragons led 67-64 after a pair of Massenat free throws with just six seconds remaining. However, David Walker fed Pollard in the right corner and the junior knocked down a three-pointer which tied the game and silenced the sell-out crowd at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. In the extra period, the Dragons again held a three-point lead in the final minute, but again Pollard tied it, this time with a three-point play with 33 seconds left. Drexel had the final possession, but Massenat's drive to the basket, drew contact, but no call as the teams were forced to play another frame.
The Huskies led by as many as seven points in the second half on two occasions. Scott Eatherton, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, scored on a lay-in with 9:02 to play to put NU up 52-45. The Dragons chipped away and eventually tied the game on a pair of Fouch free throws with 3:24 left in regulation. Drexel grabbed the momentum and had two three-point leads late before Pollard's shot sent the game to overtime.
Fouch was sensational all afternoon. The graduate student needed just 15 shots to get 31 points. He was 6-for-8 from long range and 10-for-15 overall from the floor. Massenat was also outstanding. The senior missed a triple-double by just two assists. He had career-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds to go along with eight assists. Tavon Allen added 18 points before leaving the game with an undisclosed leg injury.
Drexel played the game without Kazembe Abif and Dartaye Ruffin. The two big men joined Damion Lee on the bench with injuries. Freshman Rodney Williams and senior Goran Pantovic started in their place. Williams scored six points in 20 minutes before fouling out and Pantovic had seven boards and three blocks.
Pollard led NU with 19 points and was 3-for-8 from long range. Marco Barnegas-Flores scored 17 points joining
Eatherton in double figures. The Huskies shot 51 percent in the game but were 0-for-3 from behind the arc in the extra periods. Drexel shot 47 percent and broke out of its long-range slump by making eight three-pointers. The Dragons were 11-for-12 from the line in the extra sessions.
The Dragons conclude their brief two-game homestand on Tuesday night when Towson visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The game begins at 7 p.m. and can be seen live on The Comcast Network.
