Redick Puts Together Women's Basketball Program's First Triple Double in 89-49 Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A week after putting together her first-career double-double, Abby Redick took it a step further. In front of her parents and grandmother, the senior from Roanoke, Va. put together the first triple-double in the Division I history of Drexel women's basketball, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and a career high 12 assists. That performance, which spurred a monster second half from the Dragons, led them to an 89-49 victory at William & Mary.
Drexel (7-8, 2-0) moved to 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play for the second-straight year and the fifth time in its 13 seasons in the league. Sarah Curran led the team with 22 points, a career high for the freshman and her first-ever 20-point outing. She was 11-of-14 from the floor and was particularly effective in the first half, scoring 14 points to jumpstart an otherwise slow offensive start for the Dragons.
That all changed in the second half. Up three at intermission, the Dragons allowed William & Mary to tie things at 35 before they bolted ahead for good. After the Tribe evened the score, Drexel went on a 10-0 run to go up 45-35 with just under 15 minutes to play. The run would extend to 20-3 as the Dragons kept up the pressure over the next two minutes, capping it with a Jamila Thompson lay-up with 12:58 to go that stretched the lead to 55-38. In all, Drexel had six different runs of 7-0 or better.
It was during the 20-3 run that Redick began to take over. After six points, two rebounds and two assists in the first half, Redick had four points, five assists and five rebounds as the Dragons asserted themselves. With 7:06 to play, Redick found a cutting Jackie Schluth for her tenth assist. That assured at least a double-double, just seven days after the senior had 16 points and 11 rebounds against the College of Charleston for her first such outing.
After a brief rest, Redick came back into the game with 5:29 to play, needing just one board for the first triple-double in program history. The pursuit was delayed a bit because of the red-hot Dragons, who shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28) in the second half. With 2:44 to go, though, she was down low to reel in a Marlena Tremba missed three-pointer on the Drexel defensive end, prompting her teammates on the bench to erupt as Redick brought the ball upcourt. Moments later, head coach Denise Dillon substituted for Redick, again allowing her teammates and the Drexel contingent in Williamsburg an opportunity to applaud her performance.
Redick and Curran were far from the only Dragons to put together career bests on Thursday night. Meghan Creighton set a career high with eight assists in 28 minutes, not turning the ball over once. As a team, Drexel passed the ball excellently, dishing out 28 assists against just seven turnovers. Senior Tory Thierolf put together a career-high 12 points, going 4-for-5 from the floor including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. Fiona Flanagan, who scored all 10 of her points in the second half and added nine rebounds, blocked a personal-best three shots. Jamila Thompson's six points, Carrie Alexander's six assists, and Jackie Schluth's three steals were also career highs. Ashida Cooper, making her first appearance in a Drexel uniform, was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line for two points.
As a team, the Dragons' 89 points marked the most since a 91-84 overtime win at Northeastern on January 28, 2010.
Drexel matched its season high with 42 points in the paint as the Dragons made interior play an emphasis for a second-straight contest. The Dragons also dominated the glass, outrebounding William & Mary 44-25. Kyla Kerstetter led the Tribe with 19 points, while Kaitlyn Mathieu added 13.
Thursday's game marked the first of a three-game road swing for the Dragons, one of two such stretches they will have during CAA play. Drexel will get back to work on Sunday when it visits rival Delaware at 2:00 p.m. in Newark. The Dragons and Blue Hens have squared off in each of the last two CAA championship games.
