Women's Basketball Cruises Past William & Mary, 66-42

PHILADELPHIA - Two weeks ago, the Drexel women's basketball team exploded for 54 points in the second half as the Dragons scored a season-high 89 on their way to an 89-49 win at William & Mary. On Thursday night, the offense was not as consistent for Drexel. However, the team's league-leading defense clamped down, holding William & Mary to 42 points - a season-low for Drexel opponents - as the Dragons cruised to a 66-42 victory.
The Dragons (10-9, 5-1) have now won nine in a row against the Tribe (4-15, 1-5) and swept the season series for the fourth-straight year. Rachel Pearson led all scorers with 15, all of which came in the first half. Tory Thierolf, who set a career high with 12 points in the teams' first meeting this season, one-upped herself with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting on Thursday night. She added five rebounds and three assists. Jackie Schluth chipped in eight, one off her career high, to go along with a team-best seven rebounds. Fiona Flanagan also had eight points, five rebounds, a team-best four assists and three steals.
The Dragons' bench scored 35 points, its highest output of the season. Along with Thierolf and Schluth, Jamila Thompson knocked down six points, as did Carrie Alexander. Alexis Smith also chipped in two points.
Drexel never trailed in the contest, the third time this season the Dragons turned that trick. The Dragons got off to a slow start offensively, scoring just four points over the game's first 4:32. Fortunately for them, William & Mary was off to an even slower beginning as the Dragons held them off the scoreboard for the first 4:13 of play. After Flanagan's drive to the hoop put the Dragons up 6-3 at the 15:28 mark of the first half, Drexel took off thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Pearson. A third Pearson trey minutes later gave the Dragons a 17-7 lead, their first double-digit edge of the night.
The Dragons' lead hovered around 10 for the rest of the first half, growing to as many as 16 late in the period after a Carrie Alexander score with 30 seconds remaining. They would go into the break up by 13, 33-20.
The second half was nearly identical, a period which Drexel won 33-22. William & Mary was aggressive in the early moments of the second half, cutting the lead to eight with a three-pointer by Marlena Tremba with 16:08 to play. That seemed to wake the Dragons up on both ends of the court, as they went on an extended 12-0 run that kept the Tribe off the scoreboard for the next 5:48, until Jazmen Boone hit one of two free throws. In all, the Tribe was held without a field goal for 6:53 as Drexel's lead ballooned to 21.
Drexel now sits at 5-1 in the league, in second place overall. The Dragons have won the first two games of a three-game homestand, and will close it out on Sunday when they host Hofstra at 2:00 p.m.
