11/30/2014 7:10:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel's defense held Southern Mississippi to just 15 second half points and defeated the Golden Eagles, 59-36, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Dragons' defense shut down the Golden Eagles, holding them to 32 percent shooting from the floor and just 2-for-13 from deep. With efforts from the three big men – Rodney Williams, Mohamed Bah and Tyshawn Myles – the Dragons were able to hold Matt Bingaya, Southern Mississippi's leading scorer, to seven points.
Damion Lee poured in an efficient 22 points. He knocked down all four of his three-point shots and was 7-for-10 from the floor. Lee had 19 of his points in the first half. Williams added a dozen, helping the Dragons to 28 points in the paint. Drexel shot 48 percent overall while holding the Golden Eagles to 32 percent shooting and 36 points. It was the first time since January of 2012 that a Drexel team held an opponent to under 40 points.
After a quick four points for the Golden Eagles to start the game, the Dragons went on an 11-0 run, capped by a London three-pointer. Drexel held USM without a field goal for more than five minutes and never trailed again. Southern Miss was able to work the Drexel lead down to three at the 13:49 mark in the first half, but the Dragons quickly extended the lead. A one-handed slam from Tavon Allen at the 6:21 mark put the Dragons up 15, before taking a 35-21 lead at halftime.
Drexel also dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Eagles, 38-24. Myles grabbed 10 boards to lead the way. Mohamed Bah chipped in with nine rebounds. The Dragons tied a season high with 17 assists and made six of their 14 long-range attempts.
Norville Carey scored the first 14 points of the game for Southern Mississippi and finished with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds.
The Dragons continue their three-game homestand on Thursday when the University of the Sciences plays at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
