Men's Basketball Falls to U. of the Sciences on a Late Three-Pointer, 54-52
12/4/2014 9:21:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia, Pa. – Garret Kerr drained a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining in the game as the University of Sciences upset Drexel, 54-52. Drexel took a late lead before Kerr's heroics gave the Devils (6-2) the unlikely win against their neighbors from University City.
The Dragons (2-5) trailed by five after Kerr made a pair of free throws with 3:39 to play. Drexel scored the next four points, two on free throws by Damion Lee and another pair on a Mohamed Bah put back, cutting the deficit to one. Each team scored on its next possession and then each team got a stop on the defensive end. Drexel took the lead with just :26 remaining when Bah found Lee cutting to the basket and the junior laid it in putting DU up 52-51. The Devils had the last possession and couldn't penetrate the lane. Kerr got the ball on the right wing and sank a three-pointer with a defender in his face, putting the Devils up by two. Drexel had one last chance but a Lee desperation three-pointer from beyond half court wasn't close.
Lee led Drexel with 17 points despite shooting just 5-for-14 from the field. He went over the 1,100 career-point mark in the contest and added a career-high five steals. Rodney Williams recorded his second career double-double of his career with a career-high tying 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked five shots. Graduate student Sooren Derboghosian had a career night as well, scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds. Drexel shot just 36 percent from the floor, including 32 percent in the first half when the Devils opened up a nine-point lead.
Kerr, the Division II Preseason Player of the Year, showed why he was given that honor. The senior scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and added four assists. Sho Da-Silva also played a strong game, adding 15 points and coming up with three steals.
The Dragons are off until December 13, when La Salle makes its first visit to the Daskalakis Athletic Center since 1983. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
