Men's Basketball Falls to City Rival La Salle on Saturday, 65-55
12/13/2014 3:09:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia, Pa. — La Salle used an early 10-0 run to take the lead and never trailed again on its way to a 65-55 win over Drexel. The Explorers, making their first trip to the Daskalakis Athletic Center in more than 30 years, had three players score in double figures as they improved to 5-4. Drexel fell to 2-6.
The Dragons came out strong in the second half. After trailing by 11 at intermission, Drexel opened the second half by scoring eight straight points. Tavon Allen started the run with a three-point play followed by a long-range three. Two minutes later, Damion Lee set up Rodney Williams for a dunk cutting the margin to 33-30. That was as close as Drexel would get. La Salle answered with an 8-2 run of its own, started by a Jordan Price three-pointer, and earned its sixth straight win against the Dragons.
Lee led the Dragons with 19 points. The junior also had nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Allen scored 14 points in his first game back from an injury. Williams led the team with 11 rebounds and added eight points.
Cleon Roberts scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Explorers. Price scored 11 points, while Rohan Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Explorers made seven three-pointers and forced Drexel into 16 turnovers.
La Salle went on a 10-0 run early in the first half to take an eight-point lead. The Explorers would hold the lead the rest of the half. During the run, Drexel went more than nine minutes without scoring and at one point missed 13 straight shots. La Salle went to intermission ahead 33-22. Drexel shot just 27 percent in the opening 20 minutes, while La Salle, after a slow start, finished the half at 45 percent.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Dragons. Drexel will head to Buffalo to face the University at Buffalo on Tuesday. The Bulls, led by Bobby Hurley, are off to a 5-2 start. Drexel will then travel to Allentown to face Penn State next Saturday in its final game before holiday break.
