HAMDEN, Conn. – The Drexel women's basketball team dropped its second straight game, 74-50 at Quinnipiac on Wednesday night. The Dragons were unable to stop the hot shooting of the host Bobcats as they saw their record fall back to .500, 4-4, on the season.
Rachel Pearson led the Dragons with 11 points. Sarah Curran added 10, with Carrie Alexander chipping in eight. In all, a season-high nine different Dragons put up points, including a personal-best seven from Florence Ouattara and Ashida Cooper's first point of the season.
Quinnipiac was able to take advantage of 10-0 and 12-0 runs to open the two halves. The Bobcats' second-half run started 17-1 before the Dragons got a Jackie Schluth lay-up more than four minutes into the period.
Alexis Smith started her second straight game, running the point in place of the injured Meghan Creighton. Meanwhile, Kelsi Lidge made her first collegiate start.
The Dragons ceded the first 10 points of the game to Quinnipiac before three-pointers from Sarah Curran and Rachel Pearson cut the deficit to 10-6. Drexel got a big contribution from Carrie Alexander, who finished the half with eight points. Alexander scored off several tough drives to the hoop, slashing through the Quinnipiac defense to get inside.
As a team, however, the Dragons had trouble getting shots to fall in the first half. The Bobcats, meanwhile, had no such issues. Drexel would pull within four and find itself unable to get a stop on the defensive end, as Quinnipiac pushed its lead back out. The Bobcats shot 53.6 percent in the first half (15-for-28), including 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from long range. Drexel, meanwhile, was 9-for-32 from the floor (28.1 percent). The Dragons did hit a respectable 5-for-13 from three-point range (38.5 percent), including two each from Curran and Pearson.
The second half began much the same as the first, with Quinnipiac firing on all cylinders and starting out on a 12-0 spurt. Unlike the first half, when Drexel pushed its way back into the game, the Dragons had no answer this time. Drexel briefly got the Quinnipiac lead back under 20, but would not be able to pose a serious threat to the Quinnipiac lead.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, the team's lone home game in the month of December. Drexel hosts Penn at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 2:00 p.m.
